Saturday Sept. 17 marks the start of Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany, but on the same day much closer to home, Oktoberfest celebrations will be in full swing at St. Joseph Church and School at 1740 Lake Ave., Wilmette.
This year?s annual Oktoberfest Celebration and Antiques Market will include the usual collection of antique and specialty item vendors selling their wares during the day, along with a Family Festival of games and entertainment for kids. There?s a special German-themed Mass at 5 p.m., followed by an adult-only German dinner with live oompah music at 6 p.m. The outdoor biergarten opens at 8:30 p.m. with entertainment from Chicago band HipHugger starting at 9:30 p.m.
New this year will be 45-minute tours of St. Joseph Cemetery from the Wilmette Historical Society. The tours of the cemetery, which is one of the third oldest in Illinois, are $5 and open to those 12 years old and older. ?The tours are great addition to this year?s Oktoberfest,? said Oktoberfest Chair Rachelle Leech. ?They highlight the rich German heritage of St. Joseph Church and the people that built this community.?
