Ever had home maintenance done or watched a home maintenance show and felt like they were speaking a different language? This can make the experience very frustrating and it puts you at risk for being taken advantage of. All it takes is a little research before a project to determine what terms will be thrown around and what their meanings are. There are hundreds of terms that are typically used during home improvement projects. In order to become familiar with basic terms you should look up certain terms before your shingle roof project begins. This way you will not feel foolish when the professionals are explaining things to you and you will have some idea of what is supposed to occur during the process.

Metal flashing is a component made from sheet metal that is used to terminate the membrane or material along the edges. Metal flashings are also used around the field of penetration. A nailer is a piece of treated lumber that is secured to the deck, walls, or to pre-manufactured curbs. There are generally installed wherever it is necessary to secure edge metal pieces and base flashings. Blocking are pieces of wood used to stiffen the deck around an opening, use as a nailer for attaching membranes and flashing, or to support a curb.

If your service pro tells you that you have an open valley, it means there is a point where both sides of the roof are trimmed back from the centerline. This exposes the valley flashing material beneath. The crow's nest or cupola is a small roofed structure that is set on the ridge of a main area. The drip edge is a piece of steel flashing that has been bent at a 90 degree angle and placed on the outer perimeter of steep sloped buildings. It is used to help direct water runoff away from the building. Drip edges resemble nosing but are outwardly-angled bottom edge. Nosing is installed around roof perimeters, curbs, platforms and should not be used in place of a drip edge.

The ridge vent is an exhaust venting device that is located on the ridge. It works with a starter or under eave soffit vent to ventilate the attic. This is important to prevent warm moisture from accumulating in the attic. When moisture accumulates in the attic and is not properly ventilated, it can lead to mold and mildew, and will shorten the life of your shingles. It also makes your home less energy efficient since more energy will be required to cool the space. The fascia is vertical trim located along the perimeter of a building and is both decorative and helps make the area more waterproof.

Knowing these terms and other like it is a helpful way to make home repairs less stressful. If you are scheduled to have maintenance done on your home, it is important to take some time to read up on the terms that will be used during the work. This will help you feel confident about the work and understand what the service professionals are telling you as they explain the work.
