Netflix lands multi-year subscription exclusive for New Girl

Netflix lands multiyear streaming exclusive for New Girl

While Netflix has scored some coups in original content, it has arguably been slacking on deals for conventional TV shows -- Amazon has landed numerous exclusives on that front in recent months. Netflix may be making up for lost time, however, with a multi-year subscription exclusive in the US for Fox's New Girl. Effective immediately, customers can stream the Zooey Deschanel comedy's first season; further seasons will come online as they finish their initial TV runs. We doubt that New Girl by itself will lead to many converts from other services, but its presence on Netflix proves that Amazon can't let its guard down.

Gross, Here Are 5 Toxic Chemicals in Your Food

Other reports say the same thing can prevent it. Even awful food that contains arsenic and other toxic chemicals can be somehow reasoned to be not as bad for you. This video by BuzzFeed shows you what's toxic inside the food you eat (birthday cake! chicken!) but how it isn't all that bad for you either. Let's just either eat what's delicious or not eat at all! New regulatory autism gene discovered

July 1, 2013 ? A new study by Valerie Hu, Ph.D., professor of biochemistry and molecular medicine at the George Washington University (GW) School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS), reports that RORA, a novel candidate gene for autism discovered by her group in a 2010 study, regulates a large number of other genes associated with autism.

"We are focusing on this gene, in part, because this gene can act as a master regulator of other genes," said Hu, whose study was published in the journal Molecular Autism. "Called nuclear hormone receptors, they are capable of activating or suppressing other genes in the genome. The question was which specific genes are regulated by RORA."

Hu and co-author, Tewarit Sarachana, Ph.D., a former doctoral student in the molecular medicine doctoral program at SMHS, found that RORA encodes a protein that can regulate the expression of more than 2,500 other genes. Of these 2,500 genes, many are known to be involved in neuronal development and functions, and 426 of RORA's gene targets are already listed in AutismKB, a database of known autism candidate genes.

To identify genes regulated by RORA, Hu and Sarachana used chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) with an anti-RORA antibody followed by whole-genome promoter array (chip) analysis. This genome-wide ChIP-on-chip analysis of target genes of RORA, as well as additional methods of validation, confirmed that RORA transcriptionally regulates the genes A2BP1, CYP19A1, HSD17B10, ITPR1, NLGN1, and NTRK2, such that when RORA levels are cut in half, all six genes also go down in their expression. The expression levels of these six genes are also reduced in RORA-deficient postmortem brain tissues from individuals with autism relative to that of age-matched unaffected controls.

"We see it as a domino effect, where RORA is a particularly shaky domino," said Hu. "If knocked over, it can also knock down a whole bunch of other genes, except that it's not just a single chain of events. There are multiple chains of events, leading to massive disruption of gene expression in autism."

A 2011 study by Hu's group revealed that RORA has the potential to be under negative and positive regulation by androgen and estrogen, respectively, suggesting that RORA may also contribute to the male bias of autism spectrum disorder.

Warning of more record-breaking temperatures as West bakes in heat

More record-breaking temperatures were forecast for western parts of the United States Sunday, part of extreme weather that has already caused at least one suspected heat-related death.

Temperatures will continue to soar well into the 110s and even 120s into the new week ahead across the Southwest, Weather.com forecasters warned Sunday, raising fears that more people could fall victim to the excessive heat.

Hot temperatures will also spread throughout the valleys of the Great Basin and Northwest, but not to the levels witnesses in the Desert Southwest, it said.

Saturday saw a slew of weather records broken, Weather.com reported, including in Phoenix, Ariz. which saw its fourth-hottest day in history with a temperature of 119 degrees.

Salt Lake City, Utah, had its hottest ever day on record ? 112 degrees for the second day in a row, while San Antonio, Texas set a new June record (108 degrees), as did Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Texas (107 degrees).

Las Vegas' McCarran airport tied a record for the day at 115 degrees, and at a National Weather Service office in the southwest section of the city the thermometer spiked up to 118 degrees. In Death Valley, Calif., it was 124 degrees.?

A Las Vegas Fire & Rescue crew responded to a report of an elderly man in cardiac arrest at residence without air conditioning on Saturday. When paramedics arrived, they found the man was dead,?NBC station KSNV reported. The man, who was not identified, did have medical issues but paramedics characterized his death as heat-related.

Another elderly man whose car air conditioner went out while on a road trip fell sick, stopped and called 911. He was admitted to the hospital and reported in serious condition.?

It was so hot in Nevada that rangers at Lake Mead persuaded tourists not to hike, according to the National Park Service, which posted the warning on its Facebook page.

Dr. Kein Reilly with University of Arizona Department of Emergency Medicine told NBC News Tucson affiliate KVOA that Arizona residents should stay inside and drink plenty of water.

"If you get dizzy or light headed those are some signs of dehydration. If you become confused that's a real warning sign. That's someone who needs to come into the emergency department," Reilly said.

Cooling stations were set up to shelter the homeless as well as elderly people who can't afford to run their air conditioners,? Phoenix, Ariz, Sheriff Joe Arpaio told NBC News affiliate KSNV.

NBC News? Jeff Black contributed to this report.

Kerry says progress made in peace talks

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) ?

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry says he has "considerably" narrowed the gaps between Israel and the Palestinians and he believes the start of final-status negotiations could be "wihin reach."

Kerry delivered his assessment Sunday after four days of shuttling between the sides.

Kerry says he was impressed with the "serious commitment" by both sides to resume talks, which broke down nearly five years ago.

"I know progress when I see it, and we are making progress," Kerry said.

He said he would leave a team of experts in the region to continue efforts and he plans on returning soon.
