PHOENIX (AP) ? A New York man indicted in Arizona on charges that he made Twitter death threats against two national TV commentators over their coverage of Jodi Arias, whom he claims to be in love with, told detectives he was on his way to kill one of them, authorities said Thursday.
Maricopa County sheriff's officers transported David Lee Simpson, 48, of Bath, N.Y., to Phoenix, where he was booked into jail Wednesday evening.
An Arizona grand jury indicted him July 18 on three felony counts of computer tampering and two counts of stalking.
According to a probable cause statement from the Sheriff's Office, Simpson began his tweets June 11 claiming he was responsible for the killing of Arias' boyfriend.
The threats against Nancy Grace and Jane Velez-Mitchell, both hosts of shows on Turner Broadcasting's HLN network, grew more serious June 12, the same day Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery said he planned to try again to secure the death penalty for Arias.
County authorities said Simpson told them late Wednesday "he was on his way to Georgia to kill Nancy Grace."
The man also indicated he had placed several pipe bombs in rural northern Pennsylvania, sheriff's spokesman Brandon Jones said. Jones said authorities are unaware of any connection between the bombs and the death threats.
A jury convicted Arias of first-degree murder May 8 in the June 2008 death of boyfriend Travis Alexander at his suburban Phoenix home. The same panel later failed to reach a unanimous decision on whether to sentence her to life in prison or death. Prosecutors now have the option of pursuing a new penalty phase aiming for the ultimate punishment, or avoiding it and leaving Arias with a life sentence.
Grace and Velez-Mitchell both regularly covered the nearly five-month trial. They focused heavily on Arias' guilt, which apparently angered Simpson, according to court records.
Among the threatening Tweets was one aimed at Velez-Mitchell stating, "I will be waiting for you and Nancy" when Arias' retrial begins.
In the same string of Tweets, Simpson indicated he was in Arizona and threatened to "slit Nancy Grace's throat." Investigators found he was actually still in New York at the time.
The documents indicate Simpson also used Twitter to threaten a Phoenix woman, who "stated she was scared to death."
Maricopa County Sheriff's Office investigators tracked the Twitter account to Simpson and flew to New York to interview him June 25, but Simpson had not yet been placed under arrest.
"He provided a full confession and stated he posted everything on Twitter because he was in love with Jodi Arias and he wanted a life with her," according to the probable cause statement.
Turner Broadcasting indicated Grace and Velez-Mitchell wanted to pursue charges against the man, according to the probable cause filing. The network also increased its security and told authorities that both TV personalities were concerned for their safety, the filing states.
As the investigation continued, detectives received an email from Turner Broadcasting on July 15 that said Grace and Velez-Mitchell were again receiving threats from a person they believed to be Simpson.
"Can't wait see you in Arizona I'm excited," he wrote in one, according to the records.
Simpson does not yet have an attorney. Neither Grace nor Velez-Mitchell apparently responded to him on Twitter, and Turner Broadcasting officials declined to comment.
Two days later, the records state, authorities in New York took Simpson into custody after co-workers at a garage where he worked told police he "had a loaded handgun, and stated he was going to kill Nancy Grace."
Bath police investigator Heather Barry said Thursday she had been searching for Simpson to charge him with aggravated harassment just to get him into custody. She said she then got a worried call from the garage owner.
"He said he (Simpson) was throwing stuff out, loading up the car, and he's got a gun," Barry said Thursday. "I flew over there before he left town and grabbed him. It was getting crazy."
She said she'll recommend dropping the misdemeanor harassment count, given the Arizona indictment, but she noted the New York investigation is ongoing.
On July 20, Bath and Maricopa County authorities searched a travel camper and car belonging to Simpson. They said they found two guns, a pair of handcuffs, several knives, binoculars, shotgun ammunition, a police scanner and receipts for purchases of two shotguns and a rifle.
Simpson was subsequently arrested. He is awaiting arraignment in Arizona set for Aug. 1.
Barry said Simpson's story of planting pipe bombs is credible, and she is working with Pennsylvania police to locate the devices. She wouldn't elaborate because she didn't want to cause panic but said "they are not in a location where we think anybody is in immediate danger."
Montgomery, the Maricopa County attorney, said Arizona has jurisdiction in the case because the Twitter threats were against "individuals for conduct that was occurring" in the state, meaning it stemmed from coverage of the Arias case by Grace and Velez-Mitchell, who both were in the county at times.

(Reuters) - Baidu Inc, China's top search engine, plans to acquire app store 91 Wireless for $1.9 billion to strengthen its foothold in the country's highly competitive mobile computing sector.
Baidu will buy a 57.4 percent stake in 91 Wireless, one of China's earliest appstores, from NetDragon Websoft Inc for $1.09 billion, and the remainder from other shareholders, both companies said on Tuesday.
"It's good for Baidu because if you look at mobile, currently apps are more popular than mobile sites because Internet download speeds are slow. So with the acquisition of this appstore, Baidu can work more closely with the apps developer and be able to enhance further their search capabilities," said Elinor Leung, an analyst with CLSA in Hong Kong.
China's mobile Internet market is expected to double to about 300 billion yuan ($48 billion) in 2014 from 150 billion yuan in 2012, with the number of active mobile Internet users rising to 749 million from 521 million during the same period, according to research firm Analysys International.
NetDragon's shares lost as much as a fifth of their value on Tuesday and were down 18 percent at HK$19.74 at 0305 GMT (11.05 p.m ET)
NetDragon also said in a statement that it would scrap the planned spinoff and listing of 91 Wireless on Hong Kong's secondary Growth Enterprise Market if the acquisition is finalised.

Twitter confirmed on Friday that it had finally decided to give French authorities the details of accounts used last year to post racist and anti-Semitic tweets. Back in October, the anti-Semitic hashtag #UnBonJuif (a good Jew) had made its way onto Twitter's list of trending topics in France.
The Association of Jewish Students in France (UEJF) began legal action against the microblogging service in November, asking a Paris court to force Twitter to reveal details of the accounts that used the hashtag in order that legal action could be taken against the people behind them. Twitter lost the case in January and was ordered by the court to reveal the details of the accounts in question.
The social network subsequently decided to appeal against the ruling but to no avail, with the UEJF starting a legal process aimed at getting Twitter's appeal written off, as is permitted under French law. And, at the end of June, the Paris appeal court ruled in favour of the association, saying that Twitter had not "justified its refusal to comply with the ruling". The company was asked once again to hand over the requested account details.
In a statement quoted by the French news agency AFP, Twitter said it had given information to judicial authorities "enabling the identification of some authors" of the tweets at issue, claiming this "puts an end to the dispute" and that the company and the UEJF have "agreed to continue working actively together in order to fight racism and anti-Semitism".?
However, the association had previously started a separate legal action against the company: at the end of March, it began seeking ?38.5m in compensation, which it planned to donate to the Shoah Memorial, a museum dedicated to Jewish history during the Second World War. The UEJF recently confirmed to PC Inpact that it had dropped the case.
Commenting on the news on Twitter, the French digital economy minister Fleur Pellerin expressed her satisfaction: "Twitter is cooperating with justice. End of impunity for authors of racists and anti-Semitic messages, without questioning anonymity."
Jobs at Leytonstone Jobcentre will not be cut, says Department of Work and Pensions
10:42am Monday 15th July 2013 in Waltham Forest By Zachary Norman, Reporter
Jobs at Leytonstone?s Jobcentre will not be cut, according to the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP).
The Department, headed by Chingford and Woodford Green MP Iain Duncan Smith, made the announcement late on Friday after the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) Union raised concerns last week that proposed job cuts in the public sector would see job losses in the borough.
A DWP spokeswoman said: ?We are not planning to reduce our services in Leytonstone Jobcentre or any part of the East London district.?
She added that the Department is looking to reduce the costs of its services over the next few years in line with the Government?s spending plans, whilst at the same time deliver services to people locally.
A PCS spokesman said last week that the union had been told staffing at Leytonstone Jobcentre in Lemna Road would be reduced from 54 to 46 while Walthamstow's Youth Hub on Forest Road would see numbers down from 30 to 21.
The spokesman added that the job losses were because the DWP had plans to cut 10 per cent of its workforce in East London.
PCS branch secretary George Thompson had said the job cuts would have a significant impact on help for the unemployed in the borough and that frontline services to unemployed 18-24 year olds would be particularly hard hit.
Thousands protested the military's removal of President Mohamed Morsi, demanding that he be reinstated. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

CAIRO ? Egypt?s former ambassador to the United States will become the country?s foreign minister, it was announced Sunday as the new interim government, replacing ex-president Mohammed Morsi, takes shape.
Nabil Fahmy confirmed he had accepted the post hours before the reformist Mohamed ElBaradei was sworn in as interim vice president.
The changes appear to cement the outcome of the July 3 power shift ? condemned in many quarters as a coup ? in which Egypt?s military deposed the Muslim Brotherhood-backed Morsi in favor of a civilian government that will rule until fresh elections.
Technocrats and liberals are expected to make up most of the interim government.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Embassy in Cairo announced it would reopen for routine business Monday, after a closure of about two weeks.
The Embassy was forced to close in the run up to mass protests by pro-Morsi and anti-Morsi factions on Jun. 30. Those demonstrations eventually led to the Jul. 3 power shift.
The Muslim Brotherhood is calling for mass protests Monday across Egypt to denounce the military's action, and to condemn the decision to issue arrest warrants for the movement?s leaders.
On Sunday, the U.S. State Department also announced the Deputy Secretary Bill Burns will be visiting Cairo from July 14 to July 16, and while there will meet with government officials as well as civil society and business leaders.
"In all these meetings, he will underscore U.S. support for the Egyptian people, an end to all violence, and a transition leading to an inclusive, democratically elected civilian government," the department said in a statement.

Wielu moich koleg?w badmintonist?w z ca?ego ?wiata?odwiedza?m?j ?blog, dlatego Beata Moore t?umaczy niekt?re moje wpisy dotycz?ce historii badmintona w Polsce, aby? wi?cej os?b mog?o pozna? histori? tej dyscypliny. Wiele os?b nie zdaje sobie sprawy z jakim trudem i jakim kosztem rodzi?a si? si?a i p??niejsze sukcesy polskiego badmintona. Dlatego postanowi?am kontynuowa? ten cykl artyku??w oddaj?c tym samym ho?d tym wszystkim minionym?dzia?aczom, dzi?ki kt?rym dzisiejszy badminton odnosi sportowe sukcesy.?
It was year 1982 when during Polish Badminton Association meeting, Zbigniew Przybylski, director of??Head of Physical Culture and Sport Department at Voivodeship Office??in Opole suggested shyly, why don?t we build badminton sport hall in G?ubczyce? Total silence in the meeting room. Sport Hall? In G?ubczyce? Unthinkable! Many years passed before the process started. In 1986 the first plans and drawings were presented by the team from G?ubczyce: Marian Masiuk director of Centre of Sport and Recreation, Bohdan Chom?towski- president of Badminton ?District Council in G?ubczyce, Jerzy Koz?owski president of club ?LKS Technik G?ubczyce, Ryszard Borek national coach, as well as representatives of G?ubczyce Town Hall.
All of them were very well prepared to answer all technical questions, the height ? it needed to be at least 11 metres high and big enough for at least 6 courts, plus some viewing platforms, so approximately 34 x 50 metres, with changing rooms, coaches? room, and management room. There was also a plan for a hotel with 56 rooms ? that was essential for tournaments and other events. The plan was submitted to Central Committee of Physical Culture and Tourism and we hoped that they will support our vision. To our delight the plan was accepted (and put into central plan!!! of ?Central Committee of Physical Culture and Tourism) and in 1988, building of the first badminton?sport hall in Poland ?has started. ?Marian Renke leading in 1984 ??Central Committee of Physical Culture and Tourism ?together with the Investment Department guaranteed the funds for the build. Activists from Glubczyce also put a lot of effort into getting some funds from local authorities. All looked good, to good to last! In 1985 Boles?aw Kapitan became the minister of Sport and yet again many more meetings so as the financial support wasn?t dropped. ?In 1987-1988 ?Boles?aw Kapitan was replaced by Aleksander Kwa?niewski, so yet more meetings and talks! Not sure how many meetings, but me and Andrzej Szalewicz, president of the Polish Badminton Association were frequent guests in the Ministry of Sport ( former Central Committee of Physical Culture and Tourism) and? Marian Masiuk who was in charge of the build wrote countless letters ? all that enabled us to survive until 1989.
Truly difficult years started in 1991 as there was a general chaos due to economic and political changes in Poland. There was very little money for continuing with the build. Luckily the team led by Marian continued the work, hoping that any day more money will be arranged. Then, Andrzej Szalewicz was elected a new President of the Polish Olympic Committee. He was the very first president who was not involved in Communist Party; in fact, he was fired from ZAE ?POLON? company for protecting Solidarity members. Andrzej Szalewicz was at the same time the President of the Polish Badminton Association and Union of the Polish Sports Associations. We hoped that Andrzej?s new position will help with getting more funds to put a roof on an unfinished sport hall.? There were many changes in the structure of Ministry of Sport and? people who were heading it (there were six, Zygmunt Lenkiewicz, Micha? Bidas, Zygmunt Zalewski, Marek Paszucha, Stefan Paszczyk, Jacek D?bski).
We did not give up hope though, we could not let the unfinished building rot, we had to find the way to buy more materials and continue. Andrzej Szalewicz and I persuaded Eugeniusz Pietrasik, the vice Chairman of Ministry of Sport and also President of Polish Olympics Foundation and vice president Polish Olympic Committee to visit G?ubczyce. First a quick visit to the building site, than a several hours long discussions. It was a truly successful meetings, as the funds to finalise the build in the next three years were granted. ?Just before finishing the sport hall another blow, we heard from the G?ubczyce ?Town Hall, that the hotel?that was an integral part of the build was sold. All in the glory of law! Unbelievable and sad but true.
The overall cost of the sport hall was 25 billion of old Polish zlotys.( for today 2.500.000 Polish zlotys = ca 600.000 Euro)
On the 5th of July of 1996, after of 8? long years ?investments, ?the sport hall was officially opened. At the same time, the Badminton Centre of Olympic Preparation was opened too. During the ceremony, we wished Katarzyna Krasowska player good luck, who with the coach Ryszard Borek left for the Atlanta Olympic Games 1996.
Andrzej Szalewicz received from representatives of Glubczyce Town Hall the title of the ?Honourable Citizen of Glubczyce? for his involvement in sport. Marian Masiuk, the chief of the build and OSiR director received the golden medal of Eminent Physical Culture Activist.
President of ??Regional Council ?LZS, W?adys?aw Czaczka and Jadwiga Szalewicz given medals to Zbigniew Micha?ek, president of Agricultural Conglomerate Public Company
for his support in the build of the sport hall. ?
I would like to mention, that many other people and companies help with the build of the badminton sport hall in G?ubczyce, and here are some names:? Trade ?Co-op ?Ltd. Budomex, Zofia Jarugowska, Bronis?aw Chmielewski, Eugeniusz Bugnar, Adam Wo?oszyn, Roman ?widerski, Dariusz Koz?owski as well as: Apoloniusz Iwan?w, Krzysztof Kunicki, Jerzy Liberadzki, Krystyna Bartnik, Bo?ena Domaga?a?? (Head of Physical Culture and Sport Departament of Voivodeship Office) , W?adys?aw Czaczka, ?Andrzej Walczak, Kazimierz Bernacki, G?ubczyce Town Hall,?Council Community of G?ubczyce and its president Jan Wac and many many more, whose names I simply can?t remember.
For me and Andrzej Szalewicz these are unforgettable memories!
NEW DELHI: Motorola's upcoming smartphone Moto X has been in the news for the past few months. There have also been many leaks of the phone, including specs, features and images. The latest leak, however, comes courtesy Google chairman Eric Schmidt.
The executive chairman of Google, which now owns Motorola, was spotted with the white coloured version of the handset at the recent Allen & Co conference in Sun Valley. While the Motorola logo was covered by Schmidt's hand in all leaked photos, the design of the handset's back is consistent with the rear panel that has been seen in leaked images.
From the latest crop of leaked images, it is discernable that the upcoming Moto X smartphone will have a textured back. The speaker grille will be positioned beside the camera lens, whereas the LED flash will be placed below it.
Rumoured specifications of the upcoming 'hero' smartphone (as Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside calls it) include a 4.7-inch screen that supports 720p resolution and 1.7GHz dual-core processor. It is said to run on Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) and have 16GB internal storage as well as 2GB RAM. Speculation is rife that the phone has a 10MP camera on the back, while a 2MP unit will be used in the front.
Motorola recently ran a full page advertisement for Moto X in major US newspapers, which said it will be "the first phone you can design yourself." A previous report claimed that Moto X will have customizable hardware, allowing users to choose hardware specifications like RAM, screen size etc.
The ad also hints that the phone being promoted is named X1, as per the position of the couple pictured in it. This is in line with the rumour that Moto X will not be a single smartphone, but a range of handsets, much like Samsung's Galaxy line-up.
Woodside had earlier announced that Motorola will assemble the phone at its Texas manufacturing plant.
Washington Post?s first cookbook celebrates its readers

I remember going through my mother?s old cookbooks and finding dozens of yellowed, food-stained newspaper clippings containing some of the most fantastic dishes: things like icebox cake or buttermilk fried chicken.
The Washington Post has been publishing recipes like these since the paper debuted its food section in 1956, featuring thousands of dishes and entertainment tips under the editing eye of food critic Phyllis Richman and others.
But unlike the New York Times, Chicago Tribune or Los Angeles Times, the Post has never put its recipes together in a book ?until now.
In April it released The Washington Post Cookbook: Readers? Favorite Recipes.?Read more: Fox Foodie
(Daily Caller) If Harry Reid gets his way, President Obama won?t have to worry about appointing a new Homeland Security secretary that is acceptable to Senate Republicans.
Napolitano?s resignation from the department on Friday comes as the Democratic majority leader is threatening to invoke ?the nuclear option? and change the Senate?s rules to allow administration appointees to sail through confirmation without threat of Republican filibustering.
Under that scenario, Napolitano?s replacement would likely be the first major appointment made in the post-?nuclear option? era where Republicans would have no ability to stop the confirmation of a nominee they find unacceptable.
If This Then That?or?IFTTT is an online web service that automates the Internet.?
Today, the company is launching its first app for the iPhone to help you automate on the go.
IFTTT allows you to harness the power of the Internet without a programming background. The new app is packed with hundreds of "recipes" that let users connect different Web services and apps that normally don't work together.
For example, if you wanted to back up your Instagram photos to Dropbox automatically, you could chose a recipe that says, if Instagram takes a photo, then save that photo to Dropbox. There are a ton of other recipes to choose from like:
If I get an email through Gmail, send me a text message.
Log all my completed reminders in Google Calendar.
Send me a push notification once my package arrives at my house.
What's great about the IFTTT app is that if you don't see a recipe that works for you, you can create your own.
IFTTT's mobile lead, Devin Foley,?really focused on making the app very easy to use. In fact, the app is optimized for one-hand use.
The only thing that is limiting with the IFTTT app is that you have to open the actual app to trigger certain recipes. This isn't IFTTT's fault as Apple doesn't let third-party apps access the full iOS system.
This will be a non-issue once iOS 7 launches later this year. The new iPhone operating system will allow apps to run in the background much better.
IFTTT is available now for iPhone, the app is a free download.
(Reuters) - Health insurer WellPoint Inc will pay $1.7 million for allowing health and other personal information from hundreds of thousands of people to be accessed over the Internet, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said on Thursday.
Security weaknesses in an online application database exposed information for 612,402 individuals between October 2009 and March 2010, according to the agency.
Data included names, dates of birth, addresses, Social Security numbers, telephone numbers and health information.
WellPoint, the second largest U.S. health insurer, said it informed those who were potentially impacted and has cooperated with the review.
"As soon as the situation was discovered in 2010, we made information security changes to prevent it from happening again," the company said in an emailed statement.
WellPoint said it also provided credit monitoring and identity theft insurance to all those affected, and that it is not aware of any fraud or identity theft arising from the incident.

Glass sponges take advantage of retreating Antarctic ice shelvesPublic release date: 11-Jul-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ]

The breakup and collapse of the Larsen A ice shelf in the western Weddell Sea in 1995 has resulted in fundamental changes to life on the sea bed in less than two decades. As reported by biologists from the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research in the cover story of the current issue of the scientific journal Current Biology, Antarctic glass sponges have been the prime beneficiaries of the disappearance of the ice shelf. To the surprise of the scientists, the density of these archaic filter-feeders has increased threefold between 2007 and 2011 despite only low plankton food supply and water temperatures of minus 2 degrees Celsius. The sponges had also grown remarkably quickly and had completely supplanted competitors for food. The results show that communities at the bottom of the western Weddell Sea react considerably more quickly to climate-related changes than previously thought.
Glass sponges (Hexactinellida), an archaic group of animals at the basis of the animal kingdom, dominate the shallow seafloor in the Antarctic. Many biologists believed that glass sponges grew so slowly that two-metre behemoths would have to be around 10,000 years or older. These assumptions have now been challenged in a new study led by scientists from the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) and published in the current issue of the scientific journal Current Biology.
During a Polarstern expedition to the poorly accessible region of the former Larsen A ice shelf, AWI biologists Laura Fillinger and Claudio Richter, together with colleagues from the University of Gothenburg and the Senkenberg Research Institute and Natural History Museum; succeeded in demonstrating that glass sponges can grow rapidly within a short period of time. "We were surprised by what we saw on our video screens in 2011 when we lowered our remotely operated vehicle onto the sea bed at a depth of around 140 metres. In an area, which had revealed large numbers of ascidians and only occasional glass sponges during an earlier expedition with the ice-breaking research vessel 'Polarstern' in 2007, four years later we found no ascidians at all. These pioneer species had completely disappeared, replaced by three times the number of glass sponges, including several juvenile individuals", reports Laura Fillinger, lead author of the study.
Until this time scientists had assumed that communities on the Antarctic sea bed only change very slowly because of the very low temperature (minus two degrees Celsius) and patchy supply of food in pack-ice covered waters. "We now know that glass sponges may undergo boom-and-bust cycles, allowing them to quickly colonize new habitats in a short period of time", says project leader Prof. Dr. Claudio Richter.
"To the organisms living on the sea bed, the disappearance of the hundred-metre-thick Larsen A ice shelf must have been like the heavens opening up above them", he adds. Where cold, darkness and food shortages had previously reigned, sunlight now allows plankton growth in surface waters and, hence, a rain of food comes down to the sea bed.
Glass sponges feed on the smallest plankton, which they filter from the water. The animals grow to a size of up to two metres, and their vase-like bodies provide perfect hiding, spawning and shelter opportunities for fish, invertebrates and many other sea dwellers. "Like corals, sponges create their own habitats. To an extent they are like cities on the sea bed. There is something going on wherever they grow, and this attracts other sea dwellers to them", says Claudio Richter.
New spaces are being created for such underwater worlds wherever the ice shelves on the Antarctic Peninsula are retreating or breaking up. However, scientists cannot yet definitively say whether this means that glass sponges will be one of the beneficiaries of climate change. Laura Fillinger: "There are still too many unknowns to make predictions. One example is the question of the influence of competitors: currently we are witnessing a fierce competition for space on the sea bed. Another concerns predators: in our dive in 2011 we hardly saw any of the snails and starfish, which feed on glass sponges. However, it is possible that these voracious predators will follow suit and wreak havoc."
Marine biologists at the Alfred Wegener Institute will continue to monitor the changes to communities in the western Weddell Sea. In January 2013, the planned dives in the area of the former Larsen A ice shelf had to be called off due to the solid pack ice in the Weddell Sea. However, Claudio Richter and his team hope for better pack-ice conditions during future Polarstern trips to this part of the Antarctic so that they can use new investigative methods to discover more about the life cycle of the glass sponges.
###
Glossary:
What are ice shelves?
An ice shelf is the continuation of a glacier, which floats on the sea, i.e. the part of a glacier that no longer rests on land or the sea bed. The most famous ice shelves are in the Antarctic, where the two largest of their kind can be found in the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf (with an area of some 422,000 square kilometres) and the Ross Ice Shelf (with an area of approximately 473,000 square kilometres). The thickness of the ice sheets differs from ice shelf to ice shelf, and ranges between 50 and 600
metres.
Larsen A ice shelf
"Larsen A" was the name given by scientists to the smallest and most northerly of the three Larsen ice shelves which once extended from the eastern coast of the Antarctic Peninsula to the western Weddell Sea. In January 1995 the Larsen A ice sheet collapsed within a few days during a storm, together with the Prince Gustav ice shelf to the north, affecting an area of some 2000 square kilometres. Its remains then drifted as an armada of small icebergs into the western Weddell Sea. The spectacular collapse filled headlines worldwide, because scientists had never seen before an ice shelf disintegrate so quickly. It was the first time scientists realised that climate change can produce an almost immediate and complete loss of ice shelves. The former Larsen A ice shelf region is now often covered with pack ice and therefore difficult to reach for research ships like the "Polarstern".

A few days ago the Department of the Navy solicited procurement for Lego Mindstorm NXT Robotics Kits, for use at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis. These programmable kits allow users to not only build robots, but also provide software to test and modify real-life robotic behaviors. Hello Skynet!
Did global warming cause Hurricane Sandy? That's still a matter of dispute, but the Energy Department is already citing the storm as a prime example of climate change's toll on the energy sector.
A report released this morning shows energy failures nationwide that the department blames on climate change, conveniently mapped out to emphasize where they hit home. The map includes outages suffered by power plants and petroleum producers in the Northeast caused by the megastorm that hit the region in October 2012. Also on the list: the derecho that hit a vast swath of the country?including Washington?in June of last year.
The report also uses less recent hurricanes to show climate change's damage, including Isaac, Katrina, Rita, and 2004's Jeanne.
NEW YORK (AP) - James Shields caught a break, thanks to Lorenzo Cain and a fleet of Kansas City fielders.
Shields escaped early trouble when Cain ran down a deep drive with the bases loaded, Billy Butler and David Lough backed their ace with home runs and the Royals handed the New York Yankees their third straight loss, 3-1 Tuesday night.
Cain contributed four nifty catches, and Shields appreciated each gem by the speedy center fielder.
"He seemed like he ran a little more than he usually does," Shields said. "I told him maybe I'll pay for a massage."
Said Cain: "Sounds good to me."
Defensive replacement Elliot Johnson ranged a long way for a late grounder and Kansas City backed Shields (4-6) with a pair of double plays. Fittingly, the game ended on a fine, twisting grab by another defensive sub, third baseman Mike Moustakas.
Beset by a lack of run support, Shields had won just once in his previous 12 starts, and came in with a losing record despite a 3.23 ERA and ranking among the AL leaders in several pitching categories.
Shields gave up five hits - including three consecutive singles to start the game, and four in the first overall - in seven innings. He struck out five, walked two and retired his final 13 batters.
"Forget the record. The record has nothing to do with how he's pitched," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "He's been as good as you would hope a No. 1 starter can be."
Shields improved to 8-15 against the Yankees after overcoming a rocky start. Brett Gardner led off with a bunt single and Ichiro Suzuki and Robinson Cano also singled for a run. New York loaded the bases with one out, but Shields fanned Lyle Overbay and wiggled out of trouble when Cain ran down Eduardo Nunez's fly far into the right-center field alley.
If that ball eluded him, Cain agreed, "the game is out of control."
CC Sabathia (9-7) gave up seven hits in his second complete game.
Once again, the Yankees had trouble scoring. They've managed exactly one run in each of their last three games - not since 2005 had they scored one run or fewer in three straight, STATS said.
"Any time you put four hits in an inning, you think you'll get more than one run," manager Joe Girardi said.
As for Sabathia and the Yankees' staff, "I think they are pitching pretty good. They're throwing pretty good ballgames. We're just not scoring runs for them," Girardi said.
The hitting slump left the Yankees with a three-game home losing streak for the first time since they dropped four in a row in late July 2012.
Lough led off the sixth inning with a tying home run and Butler opened the seventh with a go-ahead shot. Butler hit 29 homers last year and was an All-Star, but has slumped this season - he came into this series with six homers before connecting in the first two games.
"Got one yesterday, got one today," Butler said.
Greg Holland worked the ninth for his 22nd save, and second in two nights.
The Royals are trying to win a series at Yankee Stadium for only the second time since the beginning of the 2000 season. Thanks to Shields and the bullpen, they're 2-0 in this four-game set.
Shields didn't give up a hit after the second inning, sometimes pitching in rain and even hail.
"It was nice to settle down," he said.
Sabathia allowed only one hit until Lough homered. Butler's shot was the 20th homer yielded by Sabathia this season, second-most in the majors to the 21 off Kansas City's Jeremy Guthrie.
Doubles by Alcides Escobar and Eric Hosmer gave Kansas City an insurance run in the ninth.
NOTES: Gardner's streak of striking out ended at a team-record 16 games. He snapped an 0-for-16 rut with his bunt hit. ... Girardi said he hasn't ruled out rehabbing SS Derek Jeter from returning from the minors this weekend. ... Royals RHP Wade Davis (4-7, 5.42 ERA) starts Wednesday night vs. Yankees RHP Ivan Nova (3-2, 4.09). ... Cano's 32 hits off Shields are the third-most in the majors among an active hitter and pitcher, STATS said. Michael Cuddyer has 35 against Mark Buehrle, while Michael Young has 33 off John Lackey. If Manny Ramirez makes it back to the majors, his 36 off Andy Pettitte move to the top of the list. ... Sabathia pitched his 37th career complete game.

Pong.com is a new, brilliantly named and extremely sticky social network for lovers of flash games and haters of how staggeringly fragmented the browser-based game landscape has become.
Much like Pinterest (Pong actually stands for ?pin online network games? in this instance), Pong.com is basically a platform where anyone can organize their favorite free flash games in a single place, irrespective of who developed or published them.
Technically, the games are still hosted and linked back to the publishers? sites, and the latter can keep the ad revenue for themselves to boot (more on that below).
Pong.com has gotten a huge endorsement from none other than Atari founder Nolan Bushnell, who comments:
I love seeing this homage to Pong incorporated into present-day gaming. Pong.com is a fun and exciting breakthrough that I believe will revolutionize the online flash gaming world.
Revolutionizing the flash games market sounds like a bit of a stretch, but at least the site has proven to be incredibly sticky in my experience, not in the least thanks to the classic Atari game Bushnell helped give birth to.
With a single click, users can ?pong? games from anywhere on the Web and add them to their pong boards, which allows for games to be categorized in topics like ?First Person Shooters? or ?retro?.
When you follow another user?s board, all the ?pongs? added to it will be displayed in real-time on the Pong.com website. ?Following All? means you will see all of that user?s pongs (from all of their boards).
Pong.com encourages developers and publishers to post their games on its open platform to showcase them to users. One of the benefits of doing this, the company says, is that game developers can embed their own video ads and keep 100 percent of the revenue.
When a developer doesn?t have a 100 percent fill rate, however, Pong.com will run its own pre-roll ads to monetize the site. At a later stage, Pong.com co-founder Darius Gandhi tells me, the company will have its own ad network in place.
On a very cool sidenote, Pong.com is having the original Pong arcade machine signed by Bushnell and Atari?s other co-founder, Ted Dabney.
Allan Alcorn, who invented the Pong game, has already autographed the iconic piece of gaming history (see picture below).
I don?t know about you, but I think that?s one hell of a cool item they?re going to have in their offices. Game company bragging rights FTW.
PHOENIX (AP) ? The Los Angeles Dodgers placed center fielder Matt Kemp on the 15-day disabled list Monday with joint inflammation in his troublesome left shoulder.
Manager Don Mattingly said Kemp tried to take early batting practice before Monday night's game at Arizona but experienced more soreness and, with the All-Star break coming up, it didn't make sense to play short-handed while Kemp heals.
The move is retroactive to Saturday. Kemp was injured while swinging the bat against San Francisco on Friday night and hasn't played since. He received a cortisone shot Friday night but it hasn't helped much.
Mattingly said the team doesn't think the problem is related to the shoulder surgery Kemp had in the offseason.
"It's kind of a separate issue," Mattingly said. "It is that shoulder, though."
The Dodgers recalled outfielder Scott Van Slyke from Triple-A Albuquerque to take Kemp's roster spot.
Los Angeles also placed right-hander Stephen Fife on the 15-day DL with right shoulder bursitis and added newly acquired right-hander Ricky Nolasco to the roster.
Nolasco, obtained in a trade with Miami, will start Tuesday night. Mattingly said left-hander Chris Capuano would take Fife's next scheduled start. Fife could be back for a scheduled start after the break.
Kemp will return to Los Angeles on Tuesday to see team doctor Neal ElAttrache. It's Kemp's second stint on the DL this season. He missed 24 games from May 30 to June 25 with a right hamstring strain.
Kemp was clearly frustrated.
"It's going to take more than a couple of days," he said. "I just want to play and I want to be 100 percent when I play. I'm not good when I'm 70-80 percent. I may be all right, but I want to be more than all right."
Mattingly said the team had expected the cortisone shot to help more than it did.
"He had a shot earlier this year that seemed to make everything go away for a long time. I think that was maybe April or spring or something," the manager said. "So that's why I think we expected this thing to be gone by today.
"I think we're being a little cautious. He probably would be able to play before the break, but it didn't seem to be worth it."
Kemp is hitting .254 with four homers and 24 RBIs in 61 games. Van Slyke was optioned to Albuquerque last Friday but did not appear in a game there. In Monday night's lineup, Andre Ethier moved from left field to Kemp's spot in center, with Carl Crawford inserted in left.
Fife also is on the DL for the second time this year. He missed 33 games from April 22 to May 30, also with right shoulder bursitis. Fife is 3-3 with a 2.76 ERA in eight starts.

Cliff Lee is the only pitcher in this edition of my column who has not met the age requirement to be President of the United States. Next year, he will be eligible at age 35. The primary question is, have the pitchers named below exceeded the age limit to be effective Fantasy Baseball starters? If I?m wrong about these guys, I may have exceeded the age to write anymore. But I will take my chances.
Hiroki Kuroda: ?The 38 year-old Kuroda has taken his team into the 7th inning without giving up a run more times (11) than any other MLB pitcher, dating back to the start of the 2012 season. This year Kuroda has accomplished the feat 5 times. Hiroki has a 2.77 ERA and 1.03 WHIP. Leaving Kuroda off the 2013 All-Star team was a huge injustice. Kuroda will continue to give you quality starts the rest of the year.
Bartolo Colon: The 40 year-old Colon has completed 11 starts in a row while allowing 3 earned runs or less .His 2.69 ERA and 1.11 WHIP have surprised many after his drug suspension last year. Expect this aging marvel to regress slightly to an ERA over 3.00 in the second half, with fatigue being the primary reason for any fall-off.
A.J. Burnett: At 36 years old, A.J. is just getting better. The Pirates bullpen has been top-notch, helping Burnett with a 75.5% strand rate. Burnett has helped himself with increased strikeout rate and a tremendous GB/FB rate of 2.23. If Burnett stays healthy, he may complete one of his best seasons with a much-improved Pirates team.
Tim Hudson: At age 37, Hudson is no longer a star pitcher. A stretch of 10 starts from May 5th to July 6th yielded Tim only 1 win. ?Neck and back injuries, along with the Braves? inconsistent offense and bullpen, have contributed to making Hudson to a decent complementary pitcher. Expect a gradual drop-off as the season progresses.
Andy Pettitte: 19 earned runs in his last 5 starts tell the true story. ?At age 41, he is on the decline and it may happen quick. Pettitte is losing his fastball, which means he cannot get the key strikeout at a critical time. The Yankees no longer shower him with run support and times will only get tougher. He may ride off into the sunset with Mariano after 2013.
Cliff Lee: At age 34, Lee?s K rate is down slightly and his BB rate is up a bit. But when he transformed himself from a flyball pitcher for Cleveland in 2006 and 2007 to a moderate groundball pitcher in Philly, his career track changed. He may wind up back in the AL and if that happens, expect his numbers to take a marginal hit. Lee is 8-0 in his last 12 starts.
R.A. Dickey: Has R.A. knuckled under the stress of high expectations? His ball was showing a late drop once again, leading me to believe he would bounce back from a rough start. I may have been wrong. His velocity is up, his ball is sinking and so is his appeal. ?R.A. can be brilliant on any given day, as evidenced by him allowing 3 runs or less in 4 of his last 9 starts. The problem is, allowing at least 6 runs in the last 5 of those 9 starts means he is mediocre at best at age 38.
CAIRO (AP) -- Egypt's army chief says the military will not accept political "maneuvering," in thinly veiled warning to the only Islamist party that sided with the army's removal of President Mohammed Morsi but has since had frictions with other factions over forming a new leadership.
Defense Minister Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi said Tuesday in a statement carried by state TV that "the future of the nation is too important and sacred for maneuvers or hindrance, whatever the justifications."
The statement appears to refer to days of political stalemate after an ultraconservative party, Al-Nour, objected to two nominees for prime minister and outright blocked one of them, pro-reform leader Mohamed ElBaradei.
El-Sissi's statement comes shortly after a prominent economist Hazem el-Beblawi was named prime minister.
