Analytics May Help Insurers Confront New Risk Environment - Gestbiz

Posted on November 29th, 2012 by Reginald Bailly in Leadership

Insurers might be forgiven, in light of recent events, for thinking that the world has become a more risky place.? Natural disasters ranging from the Japanese earthquake and tsunami to Hurricane Sandy have demonstrated the destruction that nature can wreak.? As if natural disasters weren?t enough of a problem, property and casualty insurers must also address new categories of risk, ranging from cyber crime to sophisticated automobile claims fraud, carried out in some cases by organized crime rings.

Since the creation of the first actuarial table, insurers have used some form of analytics to assess the levels of risk their clients face and to determine how to manage such risk.? In the last few years, however, risk analytics have become much more powerful, driven in part by advances in areas such as modeling and testing, but also by the explosion of data available for analysis.? Both P&C and life insurers now typically have access to quantitative and qualitative tools and techniques designed to estimate the impact and frequency of specific business risks and to deliver positive business outcomes.?

Risk analytics can augment more traditional reporting, business intelligence and data warehousing capabilities with newer techniques in modeling, claims analytics and fraud analytics.?? To determine how effectively insurers are taking advantage of risk analytics designed to meet the challenges facing their industry, we recently completed a global risk analytics study capturing and synthesizing insights from both P&C and life insurers.

We found that insurers surveyed are strongly committed to improving their capabilities in risk analytics. They are investing in analytics to improve their risk management capabilities, and they are already seeing results.? For example, 58 percent of P&C insurers, and 65 percent of life insurers, surveyed said that the use of risk analytics has significantly improved the quality of decision-making and has also enabled proactive risk monitoring.?

In general, insurers are under pressure from their investors and they are trying to find ways to conduct their businesses more efficiently.? Ongoing high costs are pushing insurance carriers to make better use of capital, but, to do that, they typically want more confidence about their exposure to risk.? Effective risk management can help a carrier free up capital, as well.?

Compliance is another major factor fueling the interest in risk analytics.? Insurers face multiple regulatory initiatives, including the Solvency II directives aimed primarily at European insurers. We also anticipate that Solvency II?s main elements, including capital calculation models, governance, Own Risk and Solvency Assessment (ORSA) internal controls and new norms for supervisory reporting and public disclosure, will be adopted by a variety of regulators around the globe.?

Our research indicates that insurers surveyed recognize the importance of risk analytics for a range of business processes including investment selection, risk selection and pricing, fraud management and loss reserving.? Risk analytics, in particular, can support more precise calculations of risk exposure to support growth.?

Insurers can benefit from a company-wide integration of risk management so that information used to assess risk in one core insurance process is available to assess other business opportunities from a risk/reward perspective.?? Firms should also think about integrating risk considerations more widely into decisions regarding operations, capital management and management processes.? Enabling a risk-adjusted operating model can help companies align their risk management programs with business and regulatory concerns.???

This approach can deliver numerous benefits to insurers seeking to generate growth while dealing with regulatory pressure, including:

  • Better value generation through a broader application of risk management capabilities to support decision making and the pursuit of business opportunities.
  • Improved decision-making through alignment of overall risk appetite and business strategy, helping increase the efficiency of capital utilization.
  • Improved business results through integration of risk and core insurance processes and the alignment of processes and systems.?
  • Enhanced operational efficiency through an integrated IT landscape, with a comprehensive and common IT architecture for multiple functions.?

Greater economic volatility in the markets, accompanied by increased uncertainty, has generated pressure to improve risk management capabilities in the insurance industry.?? In response, insurers are typically investing in more sophisticated risk analytics tools to improve the measurement of rare risk events that can severely affect their portfolios.?

Our research indicates that insurers are committed to making the investments necessary to improving their risk analytics capabilities.? Over time, an integrated approach to modeling and risk management can provide firms with better abilities to identify and predict risk.? As real-time analytics are incorporated into insurers? business and management processes, insurers may be better able to manage their exposures and also in a better position to explore opportunities for long-term, profitable growth.?

Does human transformation of land threaten future sustainability?

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? Social and physical scientists have long been concerned about the effects of humans on Earth's surface -- in part through deforestation, encroachment of urban areas onto traditionally agricultural lands, and erosion of soils -- and the implications these changes have on Earth's ability to provide for an ever-growing population. The December 2012 GSA Today science article presents examples of land transformation by humans and documents some of the effects of these changes.

Researchers Roger Hooke of the University of Maine, USA, and Jos? F. Mart?n-Duque and Javier Pedraza of Complutense University, Spain, examine factors such as available agricultural land area and discuss some of the implications of their findings in light of human population growth and its relationship to planetary resources.

Overall, they find that just over 50% of Earth's total land surface has been modified by human activity. Because many of these modifications also result in reduction of land available for agriculture -- either by degradation of land quality by processes such as soil erosion, or by transforming agriculture lands to urban uses -- Hooke and colleagues argue that these changes to our planet's land surface also influence the ability of these same lands to sustain local, regional, and, ultimately, global population.

Comparing projections of future changes in land-use with projections of population growth leads them to also suggest that human population may be entering, or already in, a state of "overshoot" -- where the needs of the present population exceed the long-term carrying capacity of a region. Solutions may not be easy to arrive at, but would need to involve a combination of efforts aimed to reduce demand for resources, develop new technical solutions to resource limitations, and to reduce the rate of growth of population.

Independence drive falters for Spain's Catalonia

(AP Photo/Manu Fernandez)

(AP) ? Voters in Spain's Catalonia region favored the right to decide on possible independence but split their ballots between fractious parties, making the prospect of secession less likely than ever.

Artur Mas, leader of the northeastern region's ruling center-right coalition, had sought an absolute majority in Sunday's vote to get a mandate for an independence referendum that the central government says would be unconstitutional. But his Convergence and Union party lost seats while another rival, the pro-independence Republican Left of Catalonia, made big gains.

Mas is expected to take weeks to try to cobble together a coalition majority. Spain's central government in Madrid predicted Monday that the result will mark the end of a secession vote drive that has distracted authorities who are trying to prevent Spain from being forced into a bailout.

While the two Catalonian parties share the goal of holding the referendum, they are far apart on almost everything else and analysts said it would be very difficult for them to form an alliance.

"They agree on the issue of the right to decide the future of the Catalan people, but on economic issues they have opposite positions," said Carlos Berrera, a communications professor at the University of Navarra.

In power for the past two years, Convergence and Union has introduced painful austerity cuts in Catalonia that have been vigorously opposed by Republican Left.

Catalonia, a region of 7.5 million people that includes Spain's second-largest city of Barcelona, is one of the areas suffering the most in the country's four-year-old economic crisis, which has left unemployment at 25 percent.

Catalonia is responsible for around a fifth of Spain's economic output and many residents complain that the central government in Madrid takes in more tax money from the region than it gives back. But now Catalonia is the most indebted region in Spain and has had to seek a ?5.4 billion bailout from Madrid.

The central Spanish government, which fiercely opposes the idea of an independence referendum, was quick to praise the vote.

Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo called the outcome "a good result for Catalonia, Spain and Europe, though not for Convergence and Union."

Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria described the election as "a serious blow for Mas" but one that "put the priorities in order."

"Voters want governments focusing on the crisis and creating jobs," she added.

In all, the ruling party in Catalonia lost 12 seats, going down to 50 seats in the 135-seat regional legislature, with the Republican Left coming in second with 21 seats. Five other parties split the remainder, with most of those seats going to parties opposed to independence.

Mas did not immediately outline Monday how he will try to form a government. Republican Left leader Oriol Junqueras said voters had issued a "mandate to hold a referendum" but he ruled out forming a coalition with Convergence and Union.

Junqueras said his party would continue to demand that Mas' government change its austerity policies, calling for lower taxes for most and for banks and the rich to shoulder more costs. But he didn't rule out working with Mas on specific issues.

Jordi Matas, a political science professor at the University of Barcelona, said Mas might try to seek a limited deal with the Republican Left only on the referendum and other issues that falls short of a coalition.

While pro-referendum parties won a majority in the vote, Matas said the result of a hypothetical referendum is too hard to predict.

Mas' only other options for coalition partners are the center-right Popular Party or the center-left Socialist Party ? but he would have to drop his push for a secession referendum because both vigorously oppose such a vote.

The outcome of Sunday's vote produced such a political stalemate that it's impossible to predict whether a renewed drive for a secession referendum would work, said Angel Rivero Rodriguez, a political science professor at Madrid's Autonomous University.

"Right now we are not sure about the state of the Catalan independence process," he said. "We don't know if this new situation is going to accelerate the process or hide it again indefinitely."

Catalonia has had a long history separatist sentiment, especially since its own language and cultural traditions were harshly repressed by Gen. Francisco Franco's military dictatorship from the end of Spain's Civil War in 1939 until his death in 1975.

This fall, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy refused to ease Catalonia's tax load, prompting some 1.5 million people to turn out in Barcelona in September for the largest Catalonian nationalist rally since the 1970s.

How to Get Over Your Fear of Public Speaking - Milwaukee ...

Written by admin ? // November 24, 2012 ? // 0 Comments

Have you always avoided speaking in public because you get so nervous?

by Black Enterprise

Have you always avoided speaking in public because you get so nervous? Here?s what you can do to conquer your fear.

For many people, there?s something uniquely frightening about talking in front of a group. Even people who are otherwise outgoing and confident can struggle with anxiety when asked to present or speak.

It may feel daunting to you now. But, public speaking is a skill?and with time and practice, your ability, comfort and confidence can grow.

Approaching the podium
Before your speech, get there early?and take some time to greet people. It may help you feel more at ease to see familiar faces in the crowd.

Most important, when it?s your time to speak, just be yourself. Don?t worry about being perfect. People tend to enjoy speakers who are genuine and human.

Besides, when you learn to accept yourself?and not feel as if you have to prove something to others?it can help address the root of your anxiety.

Here are some additional tips for taming stage fright:

  • Remember why you?re there. Try to focus on your audience?s needs rather than your fears.
  • Know your topic. Remind yourself that you are the expert people need to hear.
  • Practice, practice, practice. You might enlist some supportive friends or family to hear your presentation before the big day.
  • Visualize your success. See yourself in the setting ? calm, prepared and carrying it off.
  • Before you speak, do some deep breathing or other relaxation techniques to help calm your mind and body.
  • Avoid caffeine and nicotine. Both are stimulants that can increase anxiety.
  • During your talk, think of your audience as friends. Smile. Make eye contact.
  • Try to be your most confident self ? even if you?re not particularly feeling that way in the moment.

Remember, speaking in public can get easier. Be patient?and remind yourself that you?re developing a new skill.

Mobile Wireless Communications And The Advances In The Field

Wireless communication is, as the name suggests, communication between devices which are not physically connected with the help of wires. Such things like cell phones, remotes for toy cars and TVs, PDAs, radio devices and walkie-talkies can all be put in this category. The most recent use that wireless communication technology has been put to is the variety of wireless headphones, keyboards and even your mouse for computers, and also the GPS tracking in your car which tells you the best route to your destination. The main piece of equipment that everyone typically thinks of when they hear ?wireless communications? is a cell phone or mobile wireless communications.

?

Martin Cooper is considered to be the father of mobile wireless communications. He succeeded in making the first call from a wireless telecommunications device in 1973. The cell phone has seen a lot of change and evolution since then. Unlike the cell phones today that are adept for so many things the cell phones then were only able to make and receive phone calls. They can not only make and receive calls, but also has a host of very advanced features such as internet connectivity, thanks to the Wireless Application Protocol or WAP and other such technologies. In contrast with the talk time on the phones back then, which was 35 minutes, our phones now can handle over 30 hours; that is a big change.

?

Early cell phones, or as we can call them the first generation or 1G cell phones, used to depend on the analog TDMA or Time-Division Multiple Access technology alone for communication; then came the 2G or second generation of mobile phones, which depended on the CDMA and the GSM technologies. This enabled the 2G phones to transmit not only the analog voice signals, but also the digital data signals. This revolutionized the whole idea of mobile wireless communications, as the PDAs and GPRS and WAP came into the picture. Phones today are able to be more portable as they are smaller in size. Also, as the carriers were now able to guarantee non-interference of signals over an area even with increased subscribers, mobile usage increased dramatically.

Now we are in the third and fourth generation of mobile communications, more commonly known as 3G and 4G. These would provide features like WLAN and WiMAX which would enable all the future devices to have exclusive IP addresses. Mobile wireless communications has really evolved since Martin Cooper brought us into the future with his mobile telephone.

How would you change the Samsung Galaxy S III?

How would you change the Samsung Galaxy S III

When we reviewed Samsung's Galaxy S III in the simple, gentle days of May, our reviewer wasn't sure it would win out against HTC's One X. In the intervening six months, however, the Korean behemoth has battled to the top of the smartphone world and shipped 30 million of its 2012-era flagship to consumers worldwide. But what about the phone itself? You've had half a year to burrow deep into this device and find out what you love and what you don't. It's How Would You Change time, folks, you know what to do.

As eurozone economy shrinks, gov't debt loads grow

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) ? Europe's government-debt crisis is no longer panicking financial markets. But it won't end until the region's economy starts growing strongly again.

And that will be a while.

The economy of the 17 countries that use the euro has shrunk for two straight quarters ? a common definition of a recession ? and analysts forecast little or no growth until 2014.

Without growth, there won't be enough tax revenue to help countries like Greece, Italy, Spain and Portugal narrow their deficits and slow the expansion of their debts. Their debt burdens as a percentage of economic output, a key measure of fiscal health, look worse by the day.

The eurozone's combined debts are equal to about 93 percent of the region's gross domestic product this year and that figure is forecast to rise to peak at 94.5 percent next year. In 2009, the eurozone's debt-to-GDP ratio was 80 percent. A ratio above 90 percent is generally considered high and can put pressure on governments' borrowing costs.

"The worrying thing about the projections is, the peak seems to keep moving," says Raoul Ruparel of the Open Europe think tank.

The panic in European financial markets has eased in recent months largely because of aggressive action by the European Central Bank. The ECB said on Sept. 6 that it was willing to buy unlimited amounts of government bonds issued by countries struggling to pay their debts. That pledge quickly lowered borrowing costs for Spain and Italy, which earlier in the year faced the same kind of financial pressure that forced Ireland, Greece and Spain to seek bailouts.

But stemming the crisis and heading off a default by one or more countries aren't the same as stimulating growth. The United States economy remains weak several years after actions by the Federal Reserve helped arrest its financial crisis.

Europe's economy is being held back for several reasons:

? Austerity. Whether they got into trouble by overspending or after rescuing banks from a real-estate collapse, European governments are tackling their debts the same way: By raising taxes and cutting spending, including wage cuts for public sector workers. Italy slashed its deficit by 2.8 percent of GDP this year, but economists estimate that reduced growth by 1.5 percentage points. Less spending by the government and less spending by consumers who gave more of their income to the government were a drag on the Italian economy.

? Shaky banks. Banks reeling from the financial crisis are making it harder and more expensive for businesses in the hardest-hit countries to borrow. That's crimping investment and hiring by these companies across southern Europe. Companies in Greece or Portugal are often paying twice as much interest on loans as their German competitors.

? Consumers are holding back. Wage cuts have weighed on family budgets, and people are saving more because they're worried about further economic shocks. Together, these trends have reduced consumer spending by about 1 percent this year.

? Anti-business regulation. Laws in many European countries make it hard for companies to lay workers off in lean times, and that makes employers reluctant to hire. Bureaucracy chokes the process of starting a business or exporting goods. Greece's tax accounting rules were so onerous ? permitting large penalties for minor paperwork errors ? that the EU demanded the entire rulebook simply be abolished. Parliament finally complied last week.

European governments are slowly trying to make their economies more competitive. But in a September survey on global competitiveness by the World Economic Forum, Greece, Portugal, Spain and Italy ranked low because of poor access to financing and rigid labor markets.

It requires 11 bureaucratic filings to start a business in Italy. Fellow euro member Slovenia requires two.

Eurostat data released Thursday showed that for the second straight quarter the eurozone economy contracted. Output shrank by 0.1 percent in the July-September quarter, compared with the previous quarter.

The European Union's executive commission forecasts the eurozone economy will shrink by 0.4 percent for all of 2012 and grow by just 0.1 percent in 2013.

Without growth, there's little chance of cutting into an 11.6 percent jobless rate, the highest since the euro was introduced in 1999. Unemployment tops 25 percent in Greece and Spain.

Even with a modest recovery in late 2013 and 2014, the eurozone economy will be smaller adjusted for inflation than it was in 2008, when the Great Recession reverberated around the world.

Marco Valli, chief European economist for Unicredit, has charted recoveries from five crises going back to the late 1970s. He forecasts that the eurozone economy will not recover to its 2008 level until the first six months of 2015.

"This is unusual, in that even during the major financial crisis of the past, we have never seen such a slow recovery from a financial crisis," he says.

Mac Ipad or Ipad Mini /tablet users please chime in

So i was delighted when i saw Mac bring out the Ipad mini. Waited till it hit our shelves in Canada and went off to take a look.
Lovely unit and that comment coming from a lifetime windows man...not a fan of either but just been in the "open" camp.

So about to pull the trigger $328 and i look around the unit for a place to be able to add a peripheral like say a usb port or something where i could attach a means to load my own files say jpegs taken with my point and shoot cannon.
Then i discovered there aint any. ()
So i get hold of store assistant and ask just to confirm i am not missing something. Nope i was correct.

Well that killed it for me.....but.....i am sure i have the bull by the undders so after pondering for a few days i thought what the heck let me throw it out here and see what the mac users say.

So Mac fans and users how do you use one of these devices...

I see the google nexus 7 by acer at least has a mini usb....but then that cannot be used to mount a memory stick unless one roots the unit and runs a special app according to the XDA developers forum.

Whats up.....i can understand cloud computing but idiot designers/ marketeers we got to be able to get out stuff on the device first to get it into the cloud.

Someone please help me out here i am lost at the logic.

Why could they not put a sd card reader in and why on the bigger tablets have we still got to live with being tied into bloatware necessitating rooting to be able to use your device u paid for your way?

I swallowed this nonsense reluctantly on the smartphone because of no choice and contract/warranty but now its getting a bit much when an ordinary tablet has a operating system as in a version of Android that mimmics Apples behavior.

Heck the European Union had a lot to say when MS packaged IE with windows i hope they gonna nail Mac and Google the same way.

Can anyone enlighten me or have u all accepted giving up liberty and free choice along with privacy.

Search Answer: What Kind of Animal Can Do That?

Search Answer: What Kind of Animal Can Do That?Daniel Russell knows how to find the answers to questions you can't get to with a simple Google query. In his weekly Search Research column, Russell issues a search challenge, then follows up later in the week with his solution?using whatever search technology and methodology fits the bill.

The short answer: the Order is Caudata.

Search Answer: What Kind of Animal Can Do That?As I mentioned, this challenge wasn't that difficult?but it IS surprising to find a complex animal that has two closely related forms with features not normally associated with vertebrates. I was certainly surprised to find that there are salamanders without lungs and salamanders that are photosynthetic during a part of their lives. (Image via Wikipedia.)

From a search perspective, this wasn't that hard. I started with:

[ lungless vertebrate ]

and quickly found the lungless salamander link on Wikipedia. I was, I have to admit, slightly skeptical, so I did a second search by picking up the scientific name of one of the lungless salamanders (Batrachoseps) and doing a search for it:

[ Batrachoseps ]

and finding all kinds of authoritative resources (mostly herpetology departments at universities), all of which describe it as lungless.

These relatively slender salamanders absorb oxygen directly from the air through their skin and the tissue lining their mouth, a remarkable development that provides an interesting thought about how lungs might have evolved.

They also have a "naso-labial groove" that is lined with glands to help the animal with "chemoreception"?that is, with its sense of smell.

We normally think about the ability to smell and the ability to breathe as inextricably linked, but for these salamanders, they're two very different systems.

Now that I had a lungless salamander, I did the next obvious search:

[ photosynthetic salamander ]

and found that the embryos of the spotted salamander (Ambystoma maculatum) incorporate an algae (Oophila amblystomatis). The remarkable insight was to discover that they don't just live together, but that the embryo relies on the oxygen and carbohydrates that are generated by the algal cells. The salamander embryos rely on the green algae cells to make it through their first few weeks of life.

Search Answer: What Kind of Animal Can Do That? This is particularly interesting since many people have suspected that mitochondria were originally bacteria that somehow became incorporated into animal cells. This looks very much like this same process is going on here. You could imagine an evolutionary story for salamanders that has a truly photosynthetic salamander in the distant future. (Image via Ted Levin/PhotoLibrary.com.)

One reader pointed out that there are also some lungless frogs found in Borneo and that some frogs have algae in their egg masses as well. So it's possible that some frogs might ALSO come in both lungless and photosynthetic forms. (But I wasn't able to find a study that confirmed the frog embryos were dependent on the oxygen produced by the algae... so we don't know if they're photosynthetic or not!)

But it was a nice find. And of course, it's easy to find the Order name for frogs: Anura.

And for all the readers who asked about why the picture of the sun rising over the water was a clue...it was simply a reminder than most salamanders and frogs need to spend some part of their life cycle in water (or at least very damp conditions).

Search on!

'Tattoo Nightmares': Man Inked Himself While Drunk With A ...

Ron learned a hard lesson when he was exploring the possibility of becoming a tattoo artist. He had to go to the team at "Tattoo Nightmares" to undo his own handiwork. It was back when he was in his late teens that he decided he wanted to be a tattoo artist. But lacking the proper equipment, he made his own.

He worked in his own bathroom, tattooing his inner thigh. Once he started inking himself, he said his adrenaline was pumping and he then started drinking.

"And the ink?s rejecting, ?cuz you?re probably drunk at this point," tattoo artist Jasmine Rodriguez pointed out. Whatever happened, it was a mess.

Jasmine worked her magic, though, transforming his self-done disaster into a mechanical piston design that looks like it's tearing through Ron's skin. Should he decide to expand this look beyond his inner thigh, he should probably have a professional do it.

Senators discuss comprehensive immigration changes

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Two senators on opposite sides of the aisle are proposing comprehensive changes to the immigration laws that would include a pathway to citizenship for the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants now in the United States.

Democrat Chuck Schumer of New York and Republican Lindsay Graham of South Carolina, who promoted similar proposals on separate Sunday's news shows. said that no path to citizenship would be available until the country's borders were secure.

Only then could those in the U.S. without authorization "come out of the shadows, get biometrically identified, start paying taxes, pay a fine for the law the broke," Graham said on CBS' "Face the Nation." ''They can't stay unless they learn our language, and they have to get in the back of line before they become citizens. They can't cut in front of the line regarding people who are doing it right and it can take over a decade to get their green card."

Schumer told NBC's "Meet the Press" that he and Graham have resumed talks on immigration policy that broke off two years ago and "have put together a comprehensive detailed blue print on immigration reform" that has "the real potential for bipartisan support based on the theory that most Americans are for legal immigration, but very much against illegal immigration."

Graham, however, made no mention of working with the chairman of the Senate Judiciary subcommittee on immigration, refugees and border security.

Immigration policy, largely ignored during President Barack Obama's first four years in office, has re-emerged as a major issue as Republicans seek ways to rebound from their election performance. More than 70 percent of Hispanic voters supported Obama, who has been more open than Republicans to comprehensive overhaul of immigration laws.

Three days after Tuesday's election, House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said it was time to address immigration policy. He urged Obama to take the lead in coming up with a plan that would look at both improved enforcement of immigration law and the future of the estimated 11 million people living in the country illegally. Boehner, however, did not commit to the citizenship issue.

Graham said that the "tone and rhetoric" Republicans used in the immigration debate of 2006 and 2007 "has built a wall between the Republican Party and Hispanic community," causing Hispanic support to dwindle from 44 percent in 2004 to 27 percent in 2012.

"This is an odd formula for party to adopt, the fastest growing demographic in the country, and we're losing votes every election. It's one thing to shoot yourself in the foot, just don't reload the gun. I intend not to reload this gun when it comes to Hispanics. I intend to tear this wall down and pass an immigration reform bill that's an American solution to an American problem," he said.

Both senators said the overhaul would include developing a secure document to assure employers they're hiring people authorized to work in the country, and allowing legal immigration for needed workers at all skill levels. The path to citizenship would require immigrants to learn English, go to the back of the citizenship line, have a job and not commit crimes.

Graham said the overhaul would have to be done in such a way that "we don't have a third wave of illegal immigration 20 years from now. That's what Americans want. They want more legal immigration and they want to fix illegal immigration once and for all."

In exit polls on Tuesday, The Associated Press found 65 percent favored offering most illegal immigrants workers in the United States a chance to apply for legal status, more than double the number who said most should be deported. Even among Republicans, the party associated with crackdowns on illegal immigration, about half favored a path toward staying in the U.S.

Rothschild Winter Roses Jacket - 2012 Holiday Gift Guide

2012 Holiday Gift Guide

rothschild

Nothing is as priceless as seeing our kids have fun in the snow and play with snowballs or build snowmen. It happens once in the year so we might as well let them enjoy the white showers of nature. But of course, we still have to keep them warm with the right cover-ups and most especially, winter jackets. Considering warmth and price doesn?t mean compromising the style and look of our kids, right?

rothschild winter coat

The Rothschild Winter Roses Jacket is just about warmth, comfort and style. It is what Rothschild has stood up to for 125 years now: bringing ?a unique synergy of creativity, style and quality to every coat it produces?, as their website claims. For generations, Rothschild has manufactured a lot of coats and outerwear for any ages that are designed and made to last a lifetime. It is still going up to date and is continuing to grow strong.

rothschild winter coat

This Winter Roses Jacket looks really good on my daughter. It is not too bulky on her and doesn?t look too much of an adult-jacket. She even said she thinks the jacket does not feel too heavy on her. I love how it looks on her. I was even thinking of getting more of these as Christmas presents for my daughter?s girl cousins since its sizes can range up from 4 to 12 years old. Anyway, it will come really handy for them from the fall to the winter season and will be great as school outfit staple when classes resume.

I find it absolutely pretty and very cute for little girls?being rosy and all. It is delightfully quilted and has details of pretty rosettes trimming on its hood. The waist is cinched with a matching elastic belt, too, and has a small buckle for an added accent. It has a zip front closure with a single button on each end. The fabric is 100% polyester on a satin finish and is thick enough for a cozy feel. Also, it is safe for machine wash.

If you?re still thinking of a great Holiday jacket for your daughter or a perfect present for little girls, this Rothschild Winter Roses Jacket is what I highly recommend. But if you?re looking for more options, Rothschild has a wide range of collections for girls, women and even boys. They have accessories like hats and gloves, too. Choose from their lovely coats and other pieces that are really adorable. I especially adore their Boy?s Prams which I think will look great for my baby boy on the next winter, perhaps. Every piece at Rothschild is as practical, dainty and functional as the Winter Roses Jacket. So hurry, grab them now while it?s?cold out!

The policymaker's dilemma | asymco

Here is an exchange with Robert van Apeldoorn, Journalist with?Trends Tendances Magazine in Belgium. (www.trends.be/fr). The exchange took place in early September via e-mail.

Robert: -Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is considered in Europe as a way to push growth, and is a target of national and EU policies (digital growth, etc), but the result seems to be a failure: the European computer industry (hardware) is almost dead (ICL, Siemens computers bought by Fujitsu, Olivetti almost out of computer business, Nixdorf dead) since the 90?, and the telco industry seems to be in crisis. All European companies are out of the handset business (big and fading exception is Nokia, but with ?American software), and Alcatel is suffering with telco equipement manufacturing. It seems that at best, Europe can be a good niche player, with companies like ARM (chips). Technology seems to be reduced to localized services (computer services), some software businesses. What do you thing about that point of view? Is it correct or exaggerated ?
What will remain to the European companies ?

The main problem is perphaps the creation of European platform/ecosystems. Almost all are American today: Apple IOS-iTunes, Android, Amazon,?

Why Symbian didn?t succeed as a competitive platform ?

Is it possible to create European platforms? After all, IOS succeed after a short period of time.

What are the European tech companies that could play an important role in the near future ?

My answer: You are correct in this observation. Europe has failed to generate growth on the basis of ICT. The reasons are that the rate of change in ICT is rapid and getting more so. If European businesses require intervention, support or other forms of assistance in terms of policy, the time for that coordination to take effect is longer than the cycle time of disruption.

Almost all growth has come from companies that entered the space. Google, Amazon, Apple and Facebook and even Microsoft came into positions of power from outside the industries they entered. Policy tends to offer means of sustaining incumbents or finding ?logical? or defensible entrants. I should mention that the problem of industrial policy failing is not unique to Europe. Japan and to a lesser degree Korea are also facing crises of innovation due to policies designed to sustain rather than disrupt.

It?s understandable given the need to justify spending other people?s money. No policy maker wants to spend it recklessly. However, the process of unforeseen growth is, well, unforeseeable. It cannot be predicted and it?s very likely to come from somewhere other than where you expect it.

This quickly becomes a lengthy discussion, but fundamentally the innovation process is chaotic. It?s very similar to the process of artistic creation. The crisis in innovation comes from not having sufficient chaos. If Europe wants to preserve, sustain, nurture, and maintain it will do so at the expense of creative destruction. Nobody likes chaos but everybody wants innovation. Unfortunately they are concurrent things.

thank you very much for these interesting answer. Usually the answer is the lack of venture capital or the compartimented market.

So Nokia was an exception ?

If a lack of venture capital is the problem then what is the cause of a lack of venture capital? There is plenty of capital on the continent. Why should it not be allocated to ventures? Capital markets in Europe are quite free and liquid and capital will find the best opportunities. The problem is that there are few fundable opportunities.

I think Nokia was not an exception in the sense that it was not a ?managed? success. The company (and Finland) emerged from a crisis in the early 90s. The crisis forced a re-evaluation of priorities and the success of Nokia could be attributed to a lack of emphasis in what was considered sustaining at the time (consumer electronics, TVs, natural resources, etc.) Entry into mobile phones was not what policy would have suggested was the biggest opportunity at the time. The market for mobile phones was projected to be insignificant in comparison to what was seen as success of the time (Sony, et. al.)

[Addendum: What are policy makers suggesting as the key investment themes? Which projects get funding today and which don't?]

A judge extended early voting hours in one Florida county on Sunday after the <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1352070973_1">state Democratic Party</span> sued in an effort to give people more time at the polls.</p><p>Some voters had faced waits several hours long on Saturday, the last scheduled day of <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1352070973_7">early voting</span>. The judge ruled on a lawsuit filed late Saturday in <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1352070973_0">Orange County</span> after an early voting site was shut down for several hours. The Winter Park library was evacuated when a suspicious package ? a cooler ? was found outside. It was later detonated by a local bomb squad.</p><p>Bill Cowles, the Orange County elections supervisor, said that voters who show up on Sunday will be asked to use a <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1352070973_5">provisional ballot</span>. The extra hours will be offered at only the Winter Park library.</p><p>A Republican Party spokesman said the party was not challenging the decision. Brian Burgess said state law requires provisional ballots to be used whenever a court orders an extension of voting hours.</p><p>The Democratic state party also filed a federal lawsuit Sunday morning seeking more voting time in <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1352070973_8">Palm Beach</span>, Miami-Dade and Broward counties.</p><p>Voting in <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1352070973_6">Miami-Dade County</span> and <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1352070973_4">Palm Beach County</span> didn't wrap up until early Sunday morning because voters standing in line when the polls closed were allowed to vote.</p><p>U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson and other Democrats asked Gov. Rick Scott this past week to use his emergency powers to extend early voting. The Republican-controlled Florida Legislature last year cut the number of days available for early voting from a maximum of 14 days to eight days.</p><p>Scott and state election officials, however, turned down the extension requests. Secretary of State Ken Detzner maintained that there was not a true emergency that justified the extension. Chris Cate, a spokesman for Detzner, said that the state did not plan to appeal the decision to reopen the Winter Park location.</p><p>The federal lawsuit says counties should offer <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1352070973_3">absentee ballot</span> voting at local election offices if early voting cannot be extended. Both Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties said they planned to do that.</p><p>"I decided to open because we are allowed to do so," said Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections Susan Bucher.</p><p>Bucher noted that voting in her county did not wrap up until 2:30 a.m. Sunday. Her office started accepting absentee ballots at 9 a.m.</p><p>Christina White, deputy supervisor with Miami-Dade County, said the county also decided to accept absentee ballots for four hours on Sunday at its main office.</p><p>"We are hoping that (the Democratic Party) is happy with that," White said.</p><p>Broward County is also allowing voters to pick up absentee ballots on Sunday, but only if they made an appointment in advance.</p><p>Absentee ballot voting differs from early voting in that voters must fill out their ballot, place it an envelope and then sign it. The ballot envelopes are opened later and then fed into voting machines.</p><p>During early voting, voters place their ballots directly into the voting machines.</p><p>The Orange County lawsuit asked that early voting be extended at Winter Park and that the court ask local television and radio stations to let voters know about it.</p><p>The lawsuit included sworn statements from several voters who said they waited in line for hours and were turned away because voting was suspended at the site. A volunteer with the campaign of President Barack Obama said that the crowd of voters dwindled from 300 to just 40 after voting was halted.</p><p>___</p><p>Follow Gary Fineout on Twitter:
